Hi rahni,
It is always recommended to keep up to date protection which includes latest program version to ensure best detection rate possible.
Thanks
Thanks, you two.
@ Zbynek - My protection was up to date - I updated the files every day, ran a scan every da. My issue was that even when I called with all the information that I had to go find myself, the AVG Tech guy was rude and dismissive and zero help. I went and got that info by myself and fixed the issue myself and it wasn't a tough thing once I realized I could just delete the infected file. Couldn't he have just told me that instead of implying I had no idea what I was talking about? People who call with viruses don't have a week to wait for help. This episode was the worst, but AVG let many toolbars and simple malware annoyances get by over the last years. My point had been that shortly after buying 2013, the "answer" as to why AVG wasn't finding what it was paid to do shouldn't have been that I needed to purchase an entire new 2014 version of AVG, 5 months ahead of 2014.
I did end up renewing to 2014 because my brother thought it was easier to just renew than get something else, but only the basic Antivirus (not the whole internet/Tune Up/1-click package I had) Upon updating with my new license #, I got the interface for the 2014 program, the Tune up etc uninstalled. All the interface says it's still running the 2013 version. I called and talked to a nice guy in the Philipines who confirmed I still have 2013 in the comp but it is using the 2014 license and shows the purchase. Solution? Uninstall ABG and reinstall the 2014. So I did, and my whole comp locked up and I couldn't access a thing pull up a browser or even click an icon on my desktop. I read this is a common issue. Solution to that? Call Tech support. Sigh.
thanks again for your answers
Hi Rahni,
I'm really sorry to hear about your experience with AVG and our support.
AVG's licensening model is that you purchase license/subcsription for certain time and you can always use the latest version without any further charges. E.g. now you can download and install the recently released AVG 2015.
I'd recommend you following this guide to re-gain access to your computer. Once you can boot and fully work in the Windows then go here to download and install AVG 2015.
Let me know how it goes.
Thanks,
Jan

Wasn't going to rant, but here goes.
I've had paid AVG Internet Security & Tune Up. Every scan is OK. Everything is always OK. I have let it go through the last two years that various malware has been found by other programs I run. I am pathologically careful about the comp. I even let it go when I got nag-screens like crazy to upgrade to AVG 2014 about 3 months after I paid for AVG 2013 and thought OK, I'll take a look. 2014 found a lot of malware and PUPs that the 2013 version had been saying "All ok!" to 3x a week after every scan. They were there and I took them off by hand. When I called AVG about it the snide (always) guy said Well, the 2014 is a better product so of course it would find things, you have to pay for the upgrade for a better product. Since I was "stuck" with 2013, silly me then, huh?
Two weeks ago my comp wouldn't log off. It slowed down to a crawl. The CPU was at 80%+ I knew I had a trojan, a virus, something. I was unable to work so it wasn't funny. AVG caught nothing, hadn't caught anything. I ran in safe mode. Nothing. This went on for 3 days until I said h**l with it, I knew something was there regardless of AVG's constantly not catching a thing. I disconnected from the internet, shut off AVG and ran three other virus programs (free ones) I downloaded after reading about them on virus sites and bingo! They found the Babylon toolbar (a common toolbar) and a Trojan lurking in .dll. Again, a common .dll that is commonly used for Trojans. I got on a clean computer and read so much about it I can write a book-it was obvious. Duh! and just to double check, I sent the infected file to 3 file checking sites and they all came back within the hour confirming they were infected with a trojan.
I called AVG, though I knew where it'd go. Just how it did the one and only other time in the years I've paid for service…rudely. After filling out the form and waiting, I talked to Boris, and told him how I'd just spent the week tracking down a toolbar infection and a Trojan that AVG didn't find and that I'd found the infected files. Now HOW do I get my AVG program to quarantine them for me when they arent finding this in a scan? I offered to send him the results from the sites that scanned the file for me. I told him the name of the trojan and toolbar and the location. I said I just need to know how to get them quarantined. I need to get back on the comp and get back to work.
The answer was that I can't possibly know what I'm talking about. He'll send me a little program to my email (I never got it) and I should run it. Then I should email the file it makes back to them and he'll send it on to his "top technicians" to evaluate. This might take a few days because they are all very, very busy, as I can imagine. Then they'll mail me the results with what to do. There, there, there. He will get his top guys on it. It will take a long time because they're busy, but it'll get looked at. It didn't matter that I had all the info, and I was asking why AVG dropped the ball here as this is a common virus and common trojan. He was as condescending as you could get. I got nowhere and he didn't want to be bothered.
I got back on the internet, read a bit more and found the files to remove. I spent two hours culling it off my comp by hand out of the registry, then running the other (free) programs to make sure it was gone (it is).
I'm getting nonstop nag screens to renew my AVG which expires in 12 days. Is this really what AVG has turned into?
