Download Free Version, Now I cannot open my MS Word Documents

I think I may be having a simular problem with my Microsoft Works Word Processor files.  These files had been previously loaded on a thumb drive,so I could take it to my local shipping office to print. As, I print these documents frequently.
    I've added some other files to my thumb drive, since updating AVG, but now when I try to print those files at my local shipping office, they read " file corrupted." With the updated 2015 version of AVG, there is now a document shredder which replaced my 'Delete File' option… The AVG document shredder cannot delete files from a thumb drive. And now, I have no way of deleting those files, or any other for that matter, off my thumb drive!
    I'm not certain uninstalling and reinstalling AVG will fix this problem.  I've looked, to see if there's a way to disable the documents shredder, but no luck. I've been happy with the AVG protection over the years, but… this might just be a deal breaker. Do you have any suggestions?

I downloaded the free version of AVG 2015, however, since I downloaded the program I am not able to open my MS Word documents. Every documents gives me a message which reads "The document cannot open because there is a problem with the content."  I need help I have some very important documents, please help.
