To get PRO version activated, it is necessary to have the purchase email address logged into Google Playstore.
Open AVG Antivirus and Cleaner app from Android device and select "small three horizontal lines" at the top left corner.
Select account and enter your AVG my account credentials.
This should activate your PRO version.
If you already have entered AVG my account, then uninstall both the apps.
Download free version for both the apps from Google Playstore and after installation, enter AVG my account as instructed above.

Has anyone had difficulty downloading their paid AVG ultimate virus protection and cleaner to the android from the their My AVG account? It continues to give me the free + ads google play setup

Be aware, even though you paid for Ultimate, you may not get it to show as a paid product. There is a known issue that developers are working on as a "priority". That was what I was told on May 29.
