Email scanning not working

I must own up and say I don't know, this is only my 3rd day of using Firebird, and I don't fully understand what makes this program tick. I was using Outlook before without any problems.

Mike, Is the message anything to do with encryption?

Whenever my email programme (Mozilla Firebird) checks for email I get a sign up on my Windows8 PC which says: Emailscanner is unable to scan messages because of the connection.
This has only recently started, since I reloaded Windows on the PC.
How do I fix this please
