Thanks all for your help.
Zbynek - is there a setting within the avgcfgctl tool that I can change to resolve the issue?
For example, the below appear to be related to the number of files that can be scanned:
Tcpd.scan.Options.MaxNumberOfFiles=50000
Default.tcpd.avg.queue_max=20
I don't think I'm hitting the 50000 number limit although the 20 queue limit could certainly be a factor.
Thanks again.

Hello K, I am sorry about that. I do not think AVG is compatible with Linux. Are you sure you have it installed on your Linux? Thank you.
Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on what the error code below relates to:
"…PID:7032 THID:-192939152 ID:AVG.Tcpd.ScanHandler:107.3111.BADF00D.0 MSG:Avgscand returned error 0xe0020018 to ID 1752 on object…"
I have AVG installed and being called by amavis for mail scanning. I've read the README file and have followed the setup correctly I believe. When avgd starts scanning appears to be fine - however after a number of minutes the above errors start appearing in the tcpd.pub.rollog log file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can try refer to something like this http://blog.izs.me/post/56827866110/wtf-is-emfile-and-why-does-it-happen-to-me (I know it is on OS X but idea should be same).
Thanks
