TLDR: Is EtreCheck safe for running diagnostics on MacBooks? … the OVERWHELMING majority of online info, from reputable sources, say it's a great tool, but I did see 2-3 posts stating its malware on sites like reddit an quora. There are even posts in Mac forums and service requests where apple support recommends it for people that can't/won't ship their Mac to apple so they can diagnose the issue. Finally, is there a way to post this message directly to AVG to ask for their input?
Hello - Overtime my MacBook air has started running slower and slower and it's beginning to get frustrating. Primarily its things like launching apps/files to intermittent issues with internet connectivity. While it's an older MacBook, running and intel processor, I went all out when I purchased it, so it has 10gb ram, plenty of empty hard drive space, and the processor is upgraded and would still be considered decent by today's standards, especially since Im just checking email, using word, and streaming videos.
I did a google search of my model and tons of folks, online magazines, and support groups highly recommend a product called EtreCheck. There are even support articles in Mac forums, where apple has responded to posts and recommend it. Nearly every website said its safe and reliable but of course there just had to be 3-4 people on reddit etc sayin its absolutely malware, a trojan horse, and it takes control of your camera etc. Does anyone know anything about EtreCheck?
It sounds as if the software runs a bunch of diagnostics and then spits out a report that is in plain english (or at least as plainly as possible) so less technical users can interpret the report as well as the recommended fixes to address the issues. They also offer a paid service to review the report with you and walk you through the recommended fixes (e.g you need to run disk utility, or you have redundant security measures in place that contradict one another causing slow performance, or you have ram installed that is not functioning correctly, or viruses were detected etc)
Does anyone have any insight? Also is there a way to post this message directly to AVG to ask for their input?
