I tried your suggestion. Here's how it went:
- Cold boot. AVG running normally (i.e., all features 'on').
Chrome running normally.
Facebook Gameroom running slowly/hesitantly.
- Turned AVG file shield off.
Facebook Gameroom went like gangbusters for about 2 minutes,
then went back to slow/hesitant.
No difference in Chrome (i.e., still okay).
- Turned AVG file shield on.
Facebook Gameroom slow/hesitant.
No difference in Chrome (i.e., still okay).
- Turned Behavior shield off.
No difference in either Gameroom or Chrome.
- Turned Behavior shield on.
No difference in either Gameroom or Chrome.
- Turned Web shield off.
Gameroom said it was disconnected, and tried to restart.
Chrome could not connect to the internet.
The network icon said it was connected to the internet.
Nothing I did to either Gameroom or Chrome
would get either to connect.
- Turned Web shield on.
No change in Gameroom or Chrome (i.e., both disconnected from web,
even though the network icon indicated it was connected;
bit of overkill on AVG's part, no?)
- Rebooted.
Everything back to normal (i.e., Gameroom slow; Chrome okay).
I didn't bother with any other AVG test.
Clearly, something is horribly wrong if turning off AVG's web shield
results in being unable to access the web, if not the network.
Ball's in your court.
I ran "clear tool," and tried FB Gameroom without AVG. Rebooting was WAY faster! It normally takes over a minute or so to reboot, but, since I removed AVG, it takes only seconds! When I ran Gameroom, all of the games run noticeably faster (i.e., normal speed), but still glitch/lag, occasionally; I attribute that to the network (whether it's a Facebook problem, specific game issue, or my ISP or computer, is unknown; I ran my computer's network troubleshooter, and it said everything was fine). Regardless, they, definitely, run faster without AVG. My browsers run fine, as well. After a few hours, I downloaded and installed AVG, but did not reboot, just to see what would happen. So far, things seem to be running "okay" (i.e., browsers and Gameroom running at an acceptable pace). Then, I rebooted, to see if that would make a difference. Gameroom was, definitely, slower (all games to some degree, though not equally; I checked with some of the support pages for individual games, and they claim that it's either my network or Facebook, since they don't do anything, specific for that platform (i.e., games are ported by Facebook and not supported by the game creators)). However, given the above, I think you'll agree that AVG is causing problems, at least, for me.
After weeks of struggling with horrifically slow Facebook Gameroom apps, and eliminating virtually all other potential programs, apps, browsers, etc., from being at-fault (FWIW, I'm a computer programmer with over 40 years of experience, as well as over 20 as a webmaster), on a whim, I turned off AVG (right-clicked the taskbar icon). Lo and behold, all my regular games started running at or near full-speed. I can't trust the 'net to keep AVG shut-off all the time, nor can I rely on Windows Defender, which is notorious for having holes in its shields, so, I'm asking AVG to add a white list of programs/apps/whatever to not be scanned.
Hi Steffi,
We appreciate your efforts in working towards fixing the issue.
Initially, we need to identify the AVG component that is causing the issue. To do so, follow the steps mentioned below 'Disable individual components' in this article.
Once we identify the component, we'll be able to proceed accordingly.

Free version. I uninstalled and re-installed it, about a month ago. No difference.
