Please try using offline installer which is available in this website: https://www.avg.com/download.prd-gsr-free as 32/64 bit.
To determine whether your OS is a 32-bit or 64-bit, please click on this link. http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/827218 .
Download the exact file and proceed with the installation.
Keep us informed about the status.

I am trying to install AVG Free Antivirus, it downloads ok, but during the installation a window opens stating that it cannot continue as it needs to be connected to the internet and to check my pc, however, my pc is connected to the internet.  what can I do please?

I have a 32 bit system

I downloaded the offline installer as advised, but now it is telling me that is being used elsewhere!
