Thank you for the screenshot, Michael
AVG Internet Security shouldn't cause problems with your VPN connection in the first place.
Let us know which VPN you use, since we couldn't find the AVG Secure VPN subscription under your account.
And the share us the screenshot of the error message you get when you use the VPN when you are protected by AVG.
Turning off the Fake Website Shield makes your PC vulnerable and it is not recommended.

I do not run Fake Website Shield as it causes problems with VPN connections. I have therefore turned Fake Website Shield OFF.
How do I stop AVG Internet Security (and therefore also Windows Security) from constantly showing Notifications / Alerts because Fake Website Shield is turned off
Michael, please follow the steps as mentioned in this https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Add-remove-AVG-Antivirus-components article and select 'Fake Website Shield' component for removal.
Michael, Fake Website Shield is available in the latest version of AVG Internet Security and protects you against DNS (Domain Name System) hijacking to ensure you get to the actual website you want to visit. This feature is designed to require minimal input from you. We recommend against remove this feature.
If you are sure about it, please click this link for steps to uninstall it.
This alert is also on the system tray for both AVG and Microsoft Security.
AVG says YOU ARE UNPROTECTED when i hover over teh AVG icon which is RED and Windows Security says ACTION NEEDED
