File disable mechanisms in Quarantine

Hi,

AVG Internet Security will prompt you for threat detection and move the infected file to quarantine.
The program will block all access to the files in quarantine. However, you can remove or restore the file back from quarantine.

Hi All, I am taking my first InfoSec class, so I am just learning about all of this.  In my research, I have been unable to find any information on how files are disabled when they get moved to quarantine.  I can theorize, or guess; change/remove the file extension, modify permissions to make it inaccessible to most users, make it a read only file, etc.  But I don't know how likely these are correct.  Anyone know?
