File explorer hangs

Using AVG 2016 Free, Windows 10, Lenovo desk top. After a while, when I mouse over Windows File Explorer from the start menu, I get the "busy" icon and cannot bring up File Explorer. I shut down AVG via right click on task bar icon, select "temporarily shut down". File Explore still hangs. Start Windows Task Manager; shutdown all AVG processes: then File Explorer works fine. This problem is hard to reproduce, but if I have enough up time, eventually it appears.

Tried to repair AVG; got "must uninstall AVG protection first". Tried to repair that, got "Sorry we've experienced a problem during installation" with error code 0xe00100002. AVG version information: 
version 16.71.7596; zen:1.51.2.3593; framework:1.73.2.7662; setup: 1.82.2.14608
