Having uninstalled AVG on TWO machines, I reinstalled the VPN as per the instructions above..
On my main machine, AVG will still NOT turn off but it just locks up my network connection and needs a PC restart to get my network back. So, my options are VPN ON or VPN uninstalled. There is no "OFF" mode.
I have uninstalled AVG VPN again.
On my Laptop, I reinstalled the VPN which instantly locked up firefox.
Turning the VPN OFF makes no difference. The ONLY effective remedy is to UNinstall AVG VPN and then I can browse the internet again.
With the VPN off, I get anything from zero time to around 5 minutes before my network connection is lost.
Sp... either something was left behind during the uninstall that reactivates when the VPN is restored, or the VPN is generically broken as having it break on two machines at the same time is hardly machine dependent.
What do I do now? Buy another make of VPN ?.

Recently, in January 2010, I noted that firefox was crashing, that is, not loading web sites (Constant back and forth dots in the tabs) on my laptop using Win7 Pro.
I eventually realised that turning the VPN OFF before launching Firefox would completely cure this.
At best, when the VPN was ON, I could manage maybe zero to 20 minutes of internet access before it all stopped though, interestingly, any downloads in progress were not affected.
However, on this laptop AND My main design PC, sometimes, the AVG VPN will not fully turn off (VPN telling me that the VPN is being turned off but never gets there).
This has the effect, on both my machines of preventing any internet access at all..
There is no mechanism to reset the VPN as ending the task in Task Manager and restarting VPN simply shows the same "Turning off" screen. ONLY a PC reset cures this.
I am becoming more unimpressed with the AVG VPN.
Is there a definitive fix or VPN update that will eventually cure this as I am finding it inconvenient to let VPN run on any of my machines.
Of course, when Firefox has been crashed, it is clever enough to allow me to report an issue to Mozilla but, the VPN has blocked my outgoing connections from firefox as well.
I need Firefox more than I need the VPN.
