George, we realize this must be upsetting.
If we identify which AVG component is the reason behind the issue, it will be easy for us to assist further.
Probably, web shield of AVG Antivirus free should be the reason behind this.
In your next post, confirm which component is blocking the connection and share the screenshot of error appearing for emails.

After no problems for several years I recently started having problems using my gmail account in Outlook. After trying numerous things what worked was uninstalling AVG after which gmail worked just fine. When I reinstalled it the same problem happened. Gmail does not work in Outlook,
Not sure the other email got through. What happened is that all of a sudden my outgoing emails got stuck in the outbox of Outlook. There were no incoming and and outgoing emails. The error messages dealt with the encryptions. I spoke with Microsoft for hours, and also with Google. We went over the set up. Everything was correct. I then removed the gmail account from Outlook and tried to reinstall it. No luck. The most frequent error message was:" We could not connect to the incoming (IMAP) server using the specified encryption method." I then unistalled AVG and all of a sudden everything worked. About an hour later I reinstalled it and everything stopped working. That about summarizes things.
It may take until the weekend to reply as my wife is the IT person here and I would want her to look at this. In the meantime I will reinstall AVG and live without the Outlook connection. I have the same gmail address on my Iphone where it works just fine.
