Yes, I disabled AVG email shield and email worked fine while it was off.
AVG version: 21.9.3209 (build 21.9.6698.704)

As above, the AVG free app blocks gmail in windows 10 mail. I have repaired and reinstalled. Still does it.

This isn't the usual behavior of the AVG program. Hence, we'd suggest you try repairing (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlName=Repair-AVG-Antivirus&supportType=home) AVG once & check if it helps.
