How do I remove a product that's stuck?

My AVG has been trying to update Virus Definitions for days on end. It's stuck loading. The program can't be uninstalled nor shut down, including through the Task Manager run as Administrator. Windows refuses to shut down properly because of the infinite loading.

How do I scrub this broken product from my system under these conditions? Please advise.
