I installed malwaregyts and AVG shows it is now in passive mode

We're glad to clarify this for you.
There cannot be multiple antivirus on the same computer, as they will conflict with each other & none will work effectively.
Since, Malwarebytes is installed on your computer, AVG program has gone into passive mode.
Passive Mode disables all active protection, such as Core Shields and Firewall, so you can use more than one antivirus program.
As you've a paid subscription of AVG, we'd suggest you to uninstall Malwarebytes from your computer, which would automatically turn off the passive mode.
