Icon for VPN different on computers

Hello Laurence.

It seems that you are connected to Surface computer through LAN (wired network) whose connection will be appearing as a computer icon with a wire near it.
On your laptop, you should have connected the internet through Wifi (wireless network) which is why you are seeing the icon as signal strength.
These are the icons appearing based on the type of connection that you do for the internet. It doesn't appear because of AVG Secure VPN active on your computer.
If you turn off AVG Secure VPN, you will see the respective icons for the wired and wireless connection.
Thank you.

Looking for advice on the icon on "available networks".  On my Surface - when ON - it shows a computer monitor icon.  On my HP laptop, there is just the normal wireless strength meter icon.  In both cases the VPN icon shows ON.  Is this just a matter of different computers?  Or should I always see the 'monitor' icon?

Not a problem, Larry.
Glad to know that everything is working perfectly.
Feel free to contact us if you need assistance with AVG.
Have a nice day!
