Incompatible software detected error

I am trying to re-install AVG Antivirus after uninstalling it a while ago, but now whenever I try to install it, I get an error message that reads "Avast security software is already installed on your machine. AVG AntiVirus cannot be installed as it may not be compatible with your Avast security software."

I can't find any Avast or AVG files on my computer. How do I clear all Avast-related files to let the software install?

Is there an answer to the problem? I've tried the Norton uninstaller, the uninstaller tool, removed  "NortonForMac.kext" by turning off SIP. And even reinstalled Norton and uninstalled again. None of these have fixed this problem. I have not heard back from Norton. This doesn't seem to be a problem with AVG because I also tried Avast as a test and the installer was stuck at the same point.

Any thoughts?

thank you.

I'm having the same problem installing the AVG free scanner. My error message is as follows -  Avast security software is already installed on your machine. AVG AntiVirus cannot be installed as it may not be compatible with your Avast security software. Has this problem been resolved? How do I fix it?

I'm having a similar problem when I try to install AVG free for Mac. Here is the error: Norton Internet Security security software is already installed on your machine. AVG AntiVirus cannot be installed as it may not be compatible with your Norton Internet Security security software. I can't find Norton on my computer or symantec. How can I clear any norton files, so AVG will install. Thanks in advance.

I'm having a similar issue as Ron. Reached out to Symnatec and utilized their removal tool that scrubs the machine of anything Symantec, rebooted, and I'm still receiving the same error when attempting to install AVG. Can you clarify where the installer is searching that would block the installation?

Thank you for the quick response.
I am using an Apple Mac OSX computer, and I believe the instructions on the link you provided are for Windows computers.
Is there another uninstaller/remover for OSX computers?

Hello,
Thank you for the quick response. I tried this but I'm still getting the same result. Is there a separate official uninstaller that detects any bits of Avast software that is left on my computer?
