Information Popups

After disabling my Internet connection, I saved my AVG settings in file avg_free_2021-11-21.avgconfig.  Then, I removed AVG Antivirus Free with Nirsoft''s UninstallView, which is better than Windows' Program and Features at removing registry entries.  I then ran AVG_Remover and avgclear, the latter in Windows safe mode.

With my Internet connection still disabled, I reinstalled AVG Antivirus Free 21.9.3209 from my archived offline installer, selecting to do a custom install.  That allowed me to install it in C:\AVG instead of the default location.  I also unchecked checkboxes for installing Web shield (which is provided by a feature of my browser) and cleanup.

After rebooting, I restored my settings from the .avgconfig file and then reviewed my settings, both at [Menu > Settings] and at geek:area.  I had to manually re-establish several settings.  While doing that in geek:area, I uncheck several checkboxes for "Show a notification window when action is taken".

After enabling an Internet connection and updating virus definitions, I tested by manually requesting scans of a file and a folder via the Windows Explorer pull-down context menu.  In both cases, I got both the main AVG window and a popup showing completion.  When I requested a deep scan of my entire PC or a folder scan from the AVG window, I did not get a popup on completion.

Thus, I conclude that the problem is with AVG's Explorer Scan.

This problem still happens in the following cases while scanning with AVG selected from a Windows Explorer pull-down context menu: PDF file, folder containing only Web shortcuts, and a folder containing a Web shortcut and a TXT file.

The problem did NOT occur in the following cases while scanning with AVG selected from a Windows Explorer pull-down context menu: a folder containing subfolders with PDF files, Excel spreadsheets, and Word documents; a folder containing subfolders with JPEG files, TXT files, and verious formats of videos; and a folder containing subfolders with MP4, PDF, TXT, WAV, DOCX, and XSPF files plus various Windows shortcuts (.lnk) and one Web shortcut.

This is still a problem.

I must REOPEN this issue.  I am again getting those popups.  It is annoying to have to close two different windows after I request a virus scan on a file, especially since the smaller information popup provides no real information that is already on the main AVG window.

Hi David,

Thank you for posting in the AVG Community forum.
We suggest you refer to this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlname=AVG-Antivirus-popup-notifications#:~:text=Open%20AVG%20AntiVirus%20and%20go,%2Dups%2C%20alerts%20and%20messages.) to disable the popups.
Thank you.

I just ran a test and did NOT see the popup.  However, this problem previously disappeared and then reappeared.  Therefore, I wish to leave this issue open for a while, during which I will test it some more.

How do I disable popups that merely report the same information that I see in the AVG window?

After further testing, it appears that any scan of a single individual file with AVG selected from a Windows Explorer pull-down context menu demonstrates this problem.  Every different file-type that I tried had this problem.  I tested 16 files, each with a different file-extension; only 4 were merely a plain-text files each with different file-extensions.

Yes, I know how to test.  I was a software test engineer for 30+ years, testing very complex software used by the U.S. military to fly earth-orbiting space satellites.

We're glad to hear this, David.
You're welcome.

Yes, in [Menu > Settings > Notifications], the checkbox for "Use silent mode and turn off all popups …" is checked.

It is getting late.  Perhaps tomorrow, I will uninstall via Windows Programs and Features, AVG_Remover, and avgclear, in that order.  Then, I will reinstall from my archived AVG Antivirus Free 21.9.3209 (build 21.9.6698.704).
