We apologize for the inconvenience caused. Did you use/install any third party antivirus program before? May I know if you used 'AVG Remover Tool' to remove AVG traces and then tried reinstalling your AVG Free program? Thank you.
When trying to install AVG free I get the error message "Installation failed - error code 0xc0070643"
customer support resolved my problem within minutes of my contacting them via the address they sent on an email.

We would request you to run AVG remover tool to completely remove AVG and then re install it.
Please click this link http://aa-download.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_Remover.exe to download and run the AVG Remover tool.
1. Please select the AVG products which are shown in the remover tool window and then start removal process.
2. After the remover tool process is successfully finished, restart your computer.
3. After the restart, manually delete the AVG Remover folder in the C drive of My computer.
4. Once uninstalled download the installation file using the link : http://www.avg.com/download to reinstall your AVG program.
5. Run the downloaded file to start the installation process.
6. Follow the instructions on your screen.
7. Complete the installation and restart your computer.

Have done this but get to the end of the installation process and still get the same message.
No, I have not got a 3rd party antivirus apart from windows defender, Previously I had AVG free installed which worked well. I did not use the AVG remover tool, instead i used the windows uninstall precedure.
