AVG Guru
Long story here but first a question. Why can't AVG post the full size downloader instead of a "stub" for use of those who build systems offline? I was previously getting the whole package from FileHippo and other non-stubbing (e.g. CNet is a stubber) but with AVG_Antivirus_Free_x64_693.exe, a problem has been introduced in that some of the full size version suppliers have different size install files for some reason with this release (obviously the source of the original problem). I apparently downloaded a corrupt file from one of them (found out later, didn't install a corrupted file on purpose).
Well this download was the source of a couple of offline Windows 7 laptop builds and weeks later they starting showing the same thing. (Yes, still doing Win 7 builds in 2016.) Random error messages from both laptops started appearing from AVG, so I decided to investigate and found an alternate source for the full-size install file and decided the one I installed originally was corrupted because the file size was different to other suppliers I compared it to.
I then tried to remove AVG on both the failing laptops (which had the corrupt installation I am talking about.) and it failed the removal. I then downloaded the AVG Remover tool and ran it once, it rebooted, didn't ask to run again, but this time the live wifi connection I had just used was showing the exclamation point of Limited Connectivity. Fine, I thought, I'll run Remover again. Still could not make the wifi connection work. I ran the AVG Remover again and checked "Remove anyway" (paraphrasing) but still no good. Then I ran the Remover again from Safe Mode and rebooted, still no good.
At this point I started researching and found suggestions of going into adapter settings and removing any assignments to AVG code in the properties of the network adapters. It didn't exist. I then tried suggested netsh reset syntax for various network components. It reset, the system rebooted but still the exclamation mark. More research said to remove the network drivers and install again. I didn't have the original driver for the QUalcom so I just went into device manager and removed the devices (didn't delete the driver code) and re-scanned, found and re-established the devices. Still had the exclamation.
More research suggested to delete an AVG registry entry. Searched the registry and had no AVG entries at all after the remove tool. So as a last resort I loaded DriverMax from my laptop build repository to attempt to find another driver, which was the result of another suggestion, replacing or updating the network adapter driver. This was pretty stupid of me since the Internet connection was down. What this did, however, was to trigger the Sphinx Software "Windows Firewall 10" software which I use as a free firewall protection for my laptop builds (previously used ZoneAlarm until it went to cloud-city like the rest with no user control).
Well somehow that act of summoning of the Windows Firewall interrupt when I gave Driver Max the OK to attach to the Internet, somehow at that moment the connection came back to life. Not sure if that was a coincidence but it worked for me.
So obviously a lot of others are not having this problem since I don’t see many recent queries regarding it. Also I suppose the odds of those who would download a corrupt version of this AVG release and also be using Sphinx Windows Firewall 10 would be small. However if you find yourself in this predicament and have lost your Internet Access after a corrupt install of AVG and after running the AVG Remover tool, you might try just this, install a program that triggers a use of firewall permission question and see if that also jump-starts your wireless adapter communication with your router again. I will add though that this is the only firewall problem that has occurred in many years of use of the Sphinx Software, so I would not look to it as the cause of this problem. It was something within the AVG uninstall that is failing.
Now perhaps AVG might not take into account for Sphinx Software, but hopefully if their programmers read this forum one of them will look into it. Incidentally the network adapter in use was a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 Wireless Network Adapter running on Windows 7, driver version 11.0.0.628.
