I found the root of the problem - it appears my apple driver had become corrupted and I've managed to reinstall it. All working properly again now. Thank you for your help.

Since I installed AVG, my pc no longer recognises my Apple devices so I can't import photos from my iPhone or iPad. Autoplay no longer comes up and the device is not shown in windows explorer. Could this be my new firewall, do you think? If so, how do I resolve this? Thanks.

Thanks you, Balasubramanian. I tried disabling AVG as you suggested and my Apple Devices didn't reappear. Sounds like it's probab;y not the firewall, then. I know my pc can detect the device, as iTunes recognises and can interact with it - I just can't access my camera roll.
Do you have any ideas?? Thank you so much for your help.
