Is it safe for AVG to load this file?

Hi Sam A. My name is Jovana and I'm with AVG senior support.
Please accept my apologies for not responding sooner.

Allow me to answer your initial questions one at a time.

1) VPS is our abbreviation for virus definitions that are distributed in small updates in addition to regular virus definition updates.

2)"avgElam.sys" is an AVG driver related to the Antimalware Early Launch features that protect your device.

3); 4); 5) It is necessary, as it allows the antivirus features to work properly. If not installed, there is a possibility that some of our features wouldn't work

6) While AVG Antivirus uses a lot of resources and downloads updates to keep your device safe, it shouldn't be that excessive to interrupt the general performance of your device. If you are experiencing some issues with AVG Antivirus, you can try to reinstall it with our removal tool -
1. Uninstall it via the Control panel
2. Use AVG Clear tool - bit.ly/3dJC14s
3. Restart PC
4. Install it again - bit.ly/3EQvgJT

7); 8) It is important to leave the default download directory unchanged, to ensure that the program functions fully and properly. Specifically, in this case, the directory is root due to the importance of the driver and the functionality it is associated with.

9) "engsup.exe" is another virus definitions (VPS) tool that ensures the security of your devices.

10) As in the previous case, it is equally important to download it to guarantee that the virus definitions are properly downloaded and that your device remains protected.

I hope this clarifies and helps. If you need anything else, feel free to write back. All the best, Jovana

The program which is on the computer is AVG Anti-Virus free.

The device driver which AVG Anti-Virus is trying to install is called avgElam.sys.

It requests to install the December 10th version of “engsup.exe” under “C:\Program (../../../../../../Program) Files\ AVG\Antivirus\defs\21121002/engsup.exe”.

This was detected by Zone Alarm firewall program which warns that this is “Suspicious Activity”. It is rare that the firewall shows such a warning.

According to other people who installed this program before, it would fill up the hard drive or the AVG program files folder with so many updates that the program (AVG Anti-Virus) would eventually stall and stop working.

Each of the questions asked in the prior posting are as a result of the messages posted by other people about the ELAM.sys and engsup.exe programs and what they experienced and the fact that the firewall program indicates this is “Suspicious Behaviour”.

Thank you for the answers you can provide. It is appreciated.

Error message about Suspicious Behavior appeared from my firewall program.

It states that "AVG Anti-virus vps tool is trying to load the driver :
ROOT\Program Files\AVG\Antivirus\setup\Inf\x64\avgElam.sys" and
"Application : C:\Program Files\AVG\Antivirus\21120808\engsup.exe".

1)  What does VPS mean and what does it do?
2)  What is the SysELAM.sys file and what does it do?  3)  Is it necessary?
4)  What will it do if downloaded?
5)  What will happen if it is not downloaded?
6)  Has the problem of excessive downloads (to the memory drive) as a result of downloading this
file, indicated in prior messages, been fixed?
7)  Why is AVG trying to store it there (in the ROOT) and what will that do?
8)  If that is not the correct place for it, where should it be downloaded, if it must?
9)  What is the engsup.exe program and what will it do, if downloaded?
10)  What will happen if it is not downloaded?

Until there is some certainty about this file and program and what it will do if downloaded to the location indicated, it will not be downloaded.

Thank you for any answers you can provide.  It is appreciated.

Soory about the typing error in the third paragraph.  It should have been

Alright, the error is not mine after all.  Whenever the directory address is typed out and uploaded to your message board, the slashes and word are added in the brackets for some reason by the program you use for people to post messages.
