Latest update taking excessive memory and power

Do you mean that the minimize and  'X' close button doesn't work for any window that you open on your computer?
Are you referring to the update of AVG Internet Security program?
If yes, open AVG Internet Security program. Click on "Menu–>About" from it.
Take a screenshot of that window and send it here.

I have updated AVG and it is now taking excessive memory and power and the top part (minimise, X button) does not work, any ideas

I have attached a screenshot of my interface.  The five button options work, but my AVG, Menu, minimization and close do not.  I do have malwarebytes installed too, though it is not active and can't remember it effecting an update before.  I will uninstall it and see if that helps.User-added image

Sometimes, there is a possibility for this to happen if there are any other conflicting security program installed on your computer. 
Please check & let us know if there is any other antivirus installed.
Also, as we're uncertain about the AVG interface that you see on your computer, would you be so kind to share us the screenshot of it for better clarity?
