I thought something like that would have happened
My point is my system said something like ' AVG license expires in 11 days so click here to renew now' - I did that but when I checked I saw the renewal period was one year from today not one year from the expiry date.
From your answer it seems my suspicion that AVG is trying to upsell at license renewal time by not giving all the options to the user. I did try to see what options I had and the base option was for upto ten machines. (I have two on this license!). I thought that AVG had changed the first tier multi device package from covering 2 or 3 up to covering 10.
I smiled and was pleased about AVG custoemr service but then was very surprised and disappointed to see the date loss - hence my post. I might not have posted but when I logged on to talk on line chat I got no quick answer not even from a computer so I felt AVG did not care about me.
I'm sure AVG has made a mistake soemwhere. If not there has been mistaken misrepresentation when I was promtped to 'renew' when really I was being prompted to respond to an upselling offer.

Does AVG in effect charge double for early renewal of licenses?
On booting up my PC today, AVG posted a notice on my screen to say something like ' AVG license expires in 11 days so click here to renew now' - I did that but when I checked I saw the renewal period was one year from today not one year from the expiry date.
Has AVG made a mistake?
Michael, we regret for the inconvenience caused.
AVG Internet security Unlimited will renew from the date of expiration date.
Can you mention the date, on which you renewed your product?
Please specify the name of the product? Was it AVG Internet security or AVG Internet security unlimited?
