Hello Stephen. I certainly understand your concern. For your information the antivirus program download the updates from the internet and if it suggest you to do a system restart then it is highly recommended to perform the restart only then the updates will get installed and it will give full protection to your computer. If you don't restart it will prompt you again to restart since it is mandatory it always popups to do a restart. So I always suggest you to perform the restart when the AVG program is prompting you. This has been a bad year. It seems like every other week you do a system update and the immediately require a reboot. The bad thing about these reboots is if I delay and do a system reboot later, your software does not seem to notice this and demands it's own reboot later.
I also come from the old school that only Microsoft can demand a reboot while the system is up. You fall in the same line with Apple's Itunes. Why, oh why, does a media server require a full system reboot.
