Multiple sessions of AVG Secure Browser

My computer runs slowly when I boot-up. During the start-up, task manager shows the process of 'AVG Secure Browser' with '(17)' following its process name. The HDD runs wildly for almost 30 minutes, slowing my laptop to almost unusable/
What causes this situation? How is it fixed?
