AVG Password protection will get activated automatically if you have updated AVG Internet Security program installed on your PC. May I know the version of AVG Internet Security program installed on your PC? To find: Open AVG Internet Security > Menu > About.

Hi,

I have just installed the software and  the icon has appeared on my desktop.
However, when I double click on the icon,  the window opens up (which looks fine), but closes after just 5 seconds. I have reinstalled the software, but have the same results.

thank you for your prompt response.

It appears that I must have disabled AVG at somtime, because Windows Defence Security Centre informed me that my AVG was disabled. Having reactivated it, Password Protection, is now working fine.

That's okay, Mark. Thank you for the info. 
Have you used AVG Clear and remover tool to uninstall AVG? 
You can try the repair installation https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Repair-AVG-Antivirus and check if that helps.
