Yes, AVG security is installed. Your advice via phone call to try re-boot in safe mode has solved the problem. Not sure where the conflict had arisen but these things happen.
Box re-booted normally after this and registry clean/defrag appears to run ok with no hangup.

Hello William. Do you have AVG Internet security installed along with AVG PC Tune up on your computer?
Box is running XP home on an Intel D dual core processor. Had removed a fairly large program and had run a disc defrag using the AVG tuneup which completed ok.The AVG tuneup then indicated a clean up and defrag of the registry which started but failed to complete even after running overnight. I left the box running but wasn't really expecting completion as any run taking more than an hour to complete would be assumed to have hung up for some reason. It prompts that the security part of the defragmentation has completed ok but merely continues to be seemingly caught up in a loop merely producing endless rows of dots. As there seems no way to recover the system given these conditions, what would you recommend to solve this problem? There has been no alternative but to shut the box down but on restart it goes through the usual POST sequence and windows start up but merely then recovers the AVG registry defragmentation program and attempts to continue where it left off which will then run but effectively going nowhere.
