Protection Confirmation

AVG Protection

I just installed AVG Free.
When I click on the desktop AVG icon the screen says, “You have basic protection,” and all the screens indicate green check marks and seem to work normal.  I use Vista.
However, when I hover over the AVG icon in the notification area (lower right), it says, “You are unprotected.”
Please explain.
