Protection disabled, but restart does not work

We have a message from our AVG antivirus programme that says 'Protection is disabled - Protection will be automatically enabled after PC restart' - I had the computer shut down overnight and it still appears. The 'Fix now' button will not restart the computer (desktop, windows 7) and the message does not go away. 
I would welcome any ideas, please.
We have a paid for subscription.
