Hi Avinash!
Thanks for the info. Yes, I do understand what a PUP is, and the kinds of reasons it may be unwanted. What I was asking was why this particular program - the B1 Free Archiver - triggered a PUP report (and, coincidentally, what "FileRepMetagen" refers to - is it the name of a particular threat or nuisance, found (say) in several different programs?). Why might it be a problem?
Since there seems to be no info on the site about "FileRepMetagen", I'm left in the dark. Can you please tell me what it is? Armed with that knowledge, I could then decide things like: Should I even care? Should I bother to create an exception to allow it to run?
Thanks again for your attention.
Regards,
Y.
Hello Yas,
I understand that you need to know about the threat that was detected. Please send me the screenshot http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot of the complete threat message, we will check the same and help you with the necessary information.
Hello Yas,
Sorry for the delay in responding. The "FileRepMetagen" is a basic detection of files which doesn't meet our AVG Threat Labs - Clean guidelines | AVG. That's the reason it got detected by AVG. I would request you to submit the file to us for analysis False Positive File Form.

Hi Akash!
Yes - and no! ;-)
Yes, the issue persists, as the item is still in my Quarantine area.
No, the item was only a backup of a program I eventually decided to uninstal, some months (maybe even a year) ago.
So, while I'm not really perturbed by that particular file - which I can delete completely - it does concern me that AVG was (and is still?) unable to tell me what the "FileRepMetagen" even is, let alone what threat it represents ot users, i.e., why AVG rated it a pUP and quarantined it.
Surely, AVG must have cogent reasons for classifying programs as PUPs?
Regards,
Y.
I realize this is an old thread, but AVG quarantined a file today, also for FileRepMetagen. In searching for information about this perceived threat, I found that it is supposed to be a Heruistic from Avast. The file that I downloaded was UBCD4Win - v 3.50 from download.cnet.com. I sent the file to you via the "Please Analyze This" option, and marked it as a potential false positive.
Thanks for your services
Dennis
This threat was quarantined by AVG Antivirus; the file it came in was the installer for the B1 Free Archiver. However, AVG support doesn't give me any info about this threat when I search the site for it. Please let me know what the threat actually is, and why this program is "potentially unwanted", so I can decide whether or not to restore it, keep it and make an exception for future scans. Thanks, in anticipation!

Thank you for sending the files to analyze, Dennis.
Our developer team will check and work on it. It will be fixed soon.

Yas,
Thank you for providing the screenshot. The potentially unwanted programs are which don’t really do anything good for you. For example, browser toolbars that clutter your browser, track your web browsing, and show additional advertisements to you are “potentially unwanted programs. They slow your PC down, track you, clutter the system, and show you additional advertisements.
