Hi Linda,
We're glad to look into this & help you.
Initially, we'd like to clarify that your computer would be protected against emerging threats with AVG Antivirus installed on it.
From your description, it seems that you've received a notification on your browser, which could happen due to the unwanted apps/browsers extensions installed on your computer.
We're glad that you're aware of the scam that MS doesn't call or send message to users informing that there is a threat. However, there are many technical support who pose to be MS, when they're not.
In this regard, we'd suggest you to check & remove any unwanted extensions installed on your browser or reset your browser once to check.
If you're still concerned, you can run a boot time scan using AVG.
