Renewal starting from today, not extending subscription in 3 months

My subscription expired Jan 16, 2022. I kept getting messages saying my subscription was expired, and that I was "NOT PROTECTED". I purchased a renewal, and entered the code. NOW I just have two subscriptions, the original, and one expiring in one year (from today). I've lost almost 3 months of my subscription!!! Why (WHY) would you have the system set up to say I am not protected, then take away time that I paid for?
