Yesterday I was notified that my AVG free was not working (offline) via this "robot" crap. Tried updating with repair function & that failed. Should I next try uninstall & install a new version?

We request you to run AVG Clear and Remover tools as described in this link to remove AVG completely and re install it as per the instructions in this article.
There is no separate version for Windows 7. AVG installation is common for all the versions of Windows.
I have completed the reove & clear functions. But before installing a new version, have a question. Is there a Windows 7 version of antivirus free?
