Bob, we have checked with our senior technical team, and they have recommended to not use AVG Rescue CD in this matter because there has not been any update which makes it compatible with latest Windows OS. Also, virus definition updates for 2016 and older version AVG programs have been stopped since 14th Aug 2018.
REPOSTING because I gave the wrong URL for the image -Using Rescue CD from USB-goes so far and quits
I'm trying to use theRescue CD on a USB memory stick.
I got it to run once but have problems now.
When I was able to run it and get to the main menu, I used the Update feature to update from files I had downloaded.
I was able to go to the directory on C: where I'd downloaded the updates but when I selected the directory, it failed saying that bin file was not found.
I tried coping the update files to the USB stick and tried again. Ever since then I've not been able to get it to boot completely.
The files in the directory where I downloaded the updates are:
Volume Serial Number is 4252-E832
Directory of C:\AVG Rescue

I've also tied with a DVD (don't have any blank CDs so I used a DVD - any problem with that?) with the same results - doesn't get to the main menu.
Since it is a large image and will be difficult to read here, I put in on a website - you can see it at http://thetesting.site/img/IMG_3531Resized.jpg
Here is part of the text on the screen from the last try with a USB stick. I did nothing but run the setup.exe for the Rescue CD to put it on the USB stick. I did delete everything on the USB stick before running setup.exe

After that last line, the cursor begins flashing and nothing else happens - I left it running for several minutes but it did not go any further.
As I said, I was able to get the USB and CD copies to work the first time but no more.
I downloaded the iso and zip files and used them on the last try.
I'm going to make a new DVD and try it. I'll update or submit a reply to this post with the results.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Hi Bob,
We will certainly look into this for you.
When checking your earlier post, you gave us the feedback for our product and we will certainly take this into our concern.
We would like to know if you could boot your PC in normal or safe mode. Also let us know the reason to use the Rescue CD to check and assist you further.
Thanks,
Vishnu Vardan
I have been asked to look at a system that has apparently been badly hacked and I want to run a virus scan offline before I do anything else. Thus my use of the Rescue CD.
My computer, the one I happen to be on at the moment, is fine with no problems
I remade both the CD (using a DVD) and the memory stick and can now get to the application but I can't update with files I downloaded from Install AVG on your PC, Mac | AVG installation files
I have them in a directory named AVGResQ. The content of that directory is as follows (this is from a Command Line execution of the dir command: dir > directory.txt

The directory named AVG Rescue CD unzipped contains, of course, the zip file unzipped. It is from that directory that I run setup.exe to create a USB memory stick.
When I start up the AVG Rescue CD from either a DVD or a USB memory stick, I can go to the Update section and select to update from downloaded files.
When I selected the avgresq directory, I'm told the control file is missing.
What is the control file, what is its file name? Where do I download it?
Is there a way to put the necessary update files on the USB memory stick? When I'm shown the volumes from which I can use downloaded files, it shows only the partitions on the HDD. Is there a way to reference update files copied to the USB memory stick?
I want to be able to run this without relying on anything from the PC that is in trouble. How do I do that?
I just tried the DVD again, selected the avgresq directory and this time got:
Running update
Initializing…
Analyzing…
Update failed: a .bin file is missing
I did a test and found that I can have another USB mounted and the update process shows it as a selection for the update files.
I'll put what I have on a separate USB stick and see if the update will run from there. I'm going to copy the entire contents of the avgresq directory to a USB and try the update.
Another question - since this input area is not an HTML textarea, I can't use spell check - is there a way to spell check a post?
Bob
Right!
I didn't see such a link at the time I found the error - it was still pending.
