Running an FTP server

Hello, Hug.
May I know how did you narrow this down to AVG? Please disable AVG firewall component and check if the issue is resolved. Click on Menu -> Settings -> Components -> Firewall and toggle the On/Off slider to disable it.
If the issue is resolved upon disabling the firewall component, make sure AVG firewall is configured with below recommended settings.

Open AVG Internet Security->Menu->Settings->Components->Firewall->Customize->Network Profile and change it to Private.
Open AVG Internet Security->Menu->Settings->Components->Firewall->Customize->Policies->System Rules and set all rules to "Enabled".

When I reboot I have to stop protection in order to get ServUDaemon to run.
The server program connects to port 21 OK and another port (can't remember
right now) and appears to connect OK but it only allows connect to the
sever for about 2 minuets.

Don't seem to have this problem when I removed the latest version of
Internet Security.

The instructions sheets offered do not cover the latest version as the
screen shots only show the 2013 style version. I believe I have all the
exceptions set.

I will experiment with the PRIVATE setting as advised.

Hugh

I have upgraded to AVG Internet Security Unlimited 2018 and my FTP server doesn't work any more. Was OK under 2013 but not any more. AVG have changed all the setting that were clea to see and understand but now they are as clear as mud. I have made exceptions to allow the ServeUDaemon and everything in "C/programfiles/serveU/*" and it still won't connect. What's up doc?

Thank you for the more information Hugh,
Yes, please change AVG Firewall network profile to private (open AVG Internet Security > menu > settings > components > firewall > customize > network profile > change all the network public to private), and also go to Firewall customize settings again > scroll down > click on system rules > enable all the system rules if it's not configured, please click OK and check if you can access FTP server with enabled AVG Internet Security.
Keep us informed about the status.
Best regards,
Alok.
