Security for private & public networks

My AVG Internet Security Network Inspector keeps labeling my home network as a public network, even though I’ve marked it as a “trusted network” in the “Enhanced Firewall” settings, and it’s identified as a private network in the Windows settings.  In fact every one of the networks listed under “Network Inspector” are labeled “public.” Several AVG tech support attempts and reinstalls (using AVG’s removal tool) have failed to get Internet Security to stop identifying my home network as a public network.
Now I’m wondering if it may actually be a good idea to let my home network stay as a “public network,” considering that the Internet Security firewall blocks more for public networks than for private ones.  But would it block things I don’t want blocked? So far, I’ve been accessing the internet with the firewall rules for a public network and it has not prevented me from using the internet as I normally do.  Still, looking at the firewall rules, I don’t know what the numerous names and acronyms, such as ICMP, mean. I think that the rule for remote desktop, marked with an X for public networks, means that tech support technicians would not be able to take control of my computer as they sometimes do to correct a problem. But would remote desktop work if I (temporarily) changed the X to a checkmark at the firewall rule? What else is being blocked? An AVG knowledge base article on settings for the enhanced firewall doesn’t provide much understandable detail about what the settings mean. Is there somebody who can explain in language that’s not too technical what you cannot do if your home network is treated by Internet Security as a public network?  Are there other problems if a private network is regarded by Internet Security as public? I would be very appreciative of answers.
