Share tips and solutions on AVG Products

Hello James,

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.
We can understand that you are referring to the recent AVG update changes for the AVG System tray icon.
As you explained, to scan and disable AVG temporarily you have to access the program only  by opening the AVG Zen interface.
This was the recent change made in the update.

Thank you.

I copied the "Topic" (AKA Subject) from the AVG Community main page and will Share my Tip with the community.

  • Avast bought AVG effective October 3trd, 2016 and we are already seeing the downgrades.
    • Those purchasing AVG Ultimate before September 15 have, or will find an auto-downgrade take place. In reviewing the so-called "upgrade", several services were removed and icons no longer open what they are supposed to open, or what they say they will open. You will become accustomed to open Zen by clicking Open AVG,  In Zen, click Open Avg again.
    • You use to be able to open AVG security with one click. Now it takes two.
    • To temporarily disable AVG with 2 clicks, now takes 11 clicks.
    • Of note, is that after a full scan, it fails to realize it and one more will work.
    • Only 1 AVG tech claims that this is an "upgrade" when anyone using it would agree it is a downgrade.
  • AVG, through pressure from customers, applied the quick change option to disable AVG for a selected amount of time. The recent downgrade has moved this to 11 clicks.
  • The icons two, are now wrapped in to one and neither open what they are supposed open.
If you bought a new car, and 6 weeks later find the dealer returned overnight and put one tire in the trunk, changed all your stations on the radio, moved the dashboard back to the rear of the drivers seat, and to stop the car, you need to open the trunk and work your way to the brake peddle. That's the new upgrade to Ultimate.

Caveat emptor

John, During the acquisition process various postings were made on the internet. This was just one extract…
Q: Avast and AVG offer very similar security and antivirus products. What’s the strategy, going forward?
We’ve kind of fleshed out a high-level product strategy. On the consumer side, dual brands will have a different look and feel, and some different features, but they will have a common security engine.
How will Avast determine who uses which product?
It depends on what they came in with. AVG users will continue to use an AVG-branded product, and Avast users will use an Avast-branded product. We’ll roll out the new products early in January. AVG users will get updated through their update mechanism to the new AVG, and the same for Avast users.
Both sets of product users will see some new features they did not have before, so there will be some cross-pollination.
