May I know the name of AVG program installed on your PC?
Do you suspect that AVG is causing this issue?
Let's confirm this by disabling AVG temporarily.

I have made amendments to an Excel file, and the file will no longer save - I get the message there is a Sharing Violation. This has never been an issue before with this file or Microsoft Office before - has there been some sort of update in today's download, and if so, how do I get it to work properly

Even after disabling AVG if the issue persists then the issue is not caused because of AVG.
Have you installed our trial version of AVG PC tuneup program?
You can take the screenshot of the screen dump and attach it here by clicking on "Mount Image".

The AVG Pgm is AVG Internet Security, vesrion 2015.0.6189, virus update 4533/11671 21 February
Is AVG the problem - the 1st notes with the error say: 'when saving a file, sharing violation can be caused by the way an anitvirus application interacts with Microsoft Office. I have a screen dump but can't see a way to attach to this answer.
I disabled AVG, and this makes no difference.
Just for info, when I upgraded to Windows 10, AVG impacted that - I had to remove AVG completely and reload.
