It's 2024 and same problem. It keeps creating desktop icon eventhough I keep deleting.
When I delete the shortcut from my desktop it re-appears no matter how many times I delete it and change/re-install the application via the control panel. I spoke to AVG tech via chat support and they said…

Not sure how this will help but as you can see…the shortcut shown on my desktop (I've detailed the target of the shortcut below), when deleted this is removed from my desktop to the recycle bin, when I've emptied my recycle bin I'm asked a I sure I want to delete this, which I click yes… then about 20 mins later the shortcut is back on my desktop !!!

We'd like to inform that the application shortcut may reappear whenever there is an update.
So are you saying that I'm never going to be able to permanately delete the short cut from my desktop as when I've deleted it 5 times over the past hour your telling me that you've sent an update for the applicaion each time? Or is there something in your software that checks the computers registry every 10 minsor so and if the shortcut is missing it automatically recreates it to the desktop?

Please see the multiple deletions of the shortcut after they have been automatically created even though I keep deleting them from my desktop - you need to change your software and issue an update to stop this happening.
