Should AVG VPN be set to 'Private' or 'Public'

User-added imageHello Everyone,

VPN is designed for public networks (WiFi in restaurants, cafés or airports). That is the reason why the "Network Profile" in AVG settings change the profile to public automatically when you connect via VPN. The explanation is also mentioned in VPN settings. You can check the screenshot for more information.

Thank you AVG Team.

It's now up to Microsoft to be honest about some flaws in it's software development. AVG just rewarded me with 6 months FREE extension on my current subscript (thanks again) baecause I found a BUG in their software. It is a pity though and shameful that Micorsoft engineers are not paying attention, the issue also relates relatively in their Registry System, errors not detectable. They, by not building in safe removal of Internet Service Proiver's defuncted/obsolete entries after a service is removed, changed or upgraded will impact millions of users. And it doesn't matter how good any Windows OS compatible cleaning software is used. How MS addresses this vulnerability going foward is up to them.

Again, Thank You AVG Team your reward is greatly appreciated! :)

I'm having the same problem as Marcus right after an AVG update (2023).  This problem didn't exist previously.   I'm confused - one Avast employee above says to leave the VPN network setting as the default (Public) and another says change it to Private.   I set it to Private and it defaults to Public, and a window pops up every time I connect to the internet to set/reset it.    Also, I don't understand the 'Internet Blocked' window that pops up - why does this happen?

Please advise and update the screen shot.  Thank you.

Balasubramanian, actually, I changed the VPN from Pulbilc to Private closed AVG window then opened to check and noted it changed back to Public automatically. So no, can not change to Private.

Are you sure it should be 'Private' ?

So change VNP Network Profle to "Private"? Can you confirm Balasubramanian? I can see that out going ICMP's are being blocked in Firewall and this is whay I asked the question.

Thank you AVG Team.

Hello Marcus.
We're here to help. Does the unidentified network appears only when you turn on the VPN connection? We'd suggest to keep the default settings.

Hello fellow AVGers,

I am using VPN on my PC. In my Windows 10 system tray there are 2 networks, one is my actual Network, xxxxxxxx Internet Access' and the other shows as "Unidentified network internet access" which I believe to be AVG VPN since both are the same in AVG's Network Profiles window/screen.

Just a quick question, in the window for Components/Enhanced Firewall/Network Profiles, should the VPN be set to "Private" or "Public"?

I know that my actual home Network is always 'Private' because it is a trusted network but I'm not so sure about the AVG VPN because by default AVG displays as 'Public' so what should I set this to be?

Thanks in advance ;)

I have this same issue when using my VPN(non avg vpn) and I don't like it!  It always sets it to Public even after setting it to Private.  With or without ENABLE AUTOMATIC PROFILE SWITCHING checked or unchecked.  This only started happening after I did the latest update.  This is a good example as to why I am hesitant to do ANY updates.
Who knows what surprises will arise or settings changed.
Why is this item changing to Public all the time?  Can you fix this mishap?

Thank you for your understanding.

For example...from Firewall I find hundreds of these entries in a few minutes, pretty much always the same result...can you advise please?

Good. It is recommended to change its profile as "Private", so you will get uninterrupted service and the communication through the network will not be blocked by AVG Firewall.
