Slow, very slow, startup

I am a computer dummy! I am 77 years old and still have ADD. MY computer is extremely slow starting up. AT times I have to shut it down and I'm probably doing that wrong before trying once more to boot it up. More of the time I don't even know correct terminology. I try to understand what is going on but most of the time it is a big mystery to me.  When my step grandson was here he would be a great help to me but I had no idea what he was doing. I have AVG at his recommendation.  I got a letter from AVG this morning and I am completely confused as to what to do with it.  It says something about installing some kind of long confusing code to do whatever it must do. I am lost!
