It is my understanding that one of the vulnerabilities used to hack an account is the ability of Adobe's flash plug-in to initiate a direct connection over the internet. I am frequently getting advertisments from AVG without any browser running. Most of the time I don't leave the RJ-45 jack (Internet connection) to the computer connected. But occassionally it's plugged in while I'm doing something else, word processing etc., with no browser running. Up pops an add from AVG, or alleging to be from AVG. This seems to be a direct connection from outside similiar to the Adobe scenario.  I would prefer not to have unsolicited entities roaming around unbidden in the background of my computer. Yes, I do want AVG software to perform its security functions. That is why I pay an annual fee for their excellent services. The advertisments, not even related to a web connection however, are disconcerting at least and a potential hack at worst. How am I to know someone isn't simply hitching a ride along with a real AVG ad to insert malware or if it is malware/virus/hack etc. disguised to look like an AVG ad? If hackers can penetrate Experian, the government and seemingly anyone they want to then any policy of pushing a direct connection anytime the computer is simply turned on seems like a substantial risk to me.  Is there a way to identify the open port allowing this connection and closing it? Or do I have to physically unplug the cable anytime I don't need the Internet?
Thanks, M
