Please can someone explain to me why all of a sudden my e-mail inbox is being flooded with spam,(at least 20 in the the last 24hrs) I have not altered any of my settings except to go to optimization of my PC, which I have since changed back to standard.

Thank you for providing the requested information.
Unfortunately AVG program doesn't scan the web based email since those emails are not physically downloaded to your PC.
Although AVG Resident Shield will actively protect you from any malicious content entering your PC via email.
