Stuck in Passive Mode - McAfee Anti-Virus false detection

Neil,
I understand this must be annoying.
I suggest you run the McAfee Remover to remove all the traces of McAfee from your computer and check if that fixes the issue.
Here is a link to download the McAfee Remover: http://us.mcafee.com/apps/supporttools/mcpr/mcpr.asp

If issue persists, please provide me a screenshot of the error message. Here is a link with the steps to create a screenshot: http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot . You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

AVG is stuck in Passive Mode.

It wants me to uninstall McAfee Anti-Virus which was uninstalled from this machine years ago, so there is nothing to uninstall, but AVG keeps going into Passive Mode when the system is started. Presumably AVG is falsely detecting something or some file left over from the original McAfee installation.

Disabling Passive Mode in Menu > Settings is impossible - every time Passive Mode is disabled AVG wants to restart the system, and when the system is started Passive Mode is enabled again!

Please push an update that fixes this utter mess - AVG had been fine until the latest update.

Neil,
Please accept my apologies in regards to the inconvenience this may have caused. Follow the steps below and check if that resolve your issue.

Ø  Open AVG -> Menu -> Settings -> Update -> update virus definitions AND update program definitions

Ø  Restart PC and check status of AVG components, if components are still not active click on “Fix” button in upper right side of AVG window

Ø  If fix button is not available or does not work go again into settings of AVG and now choose Troubleshooting -> Passive mode -> and deactivate it (move the slider into green color)

Ø  Restart the PC and check the situation

The final sentence in paragraph 4 of my reply above should read "the PC restarted with Passive Mode enabled"

Thanks Karthikeyan - diagnostics have now been uploaded.

Thank you for the detailed information. I have emailed you the steps to collect error logs from your computer. Please follow the same and send us the output. Our senior team will contact you via email with a solution, after analyzing the log files.

I have also tried the McAfee Removal Tool:

http://us.mcafee.com/apps/supporttools/mcpr/mcpr.asp

but the result is the same - after restarting, AVG continues to insist that McAfee is installed when it is not.

Neil, we are happy to hear that your issue is resolved. We appreciate your time and co-operation. The CMD line our senior techs used are sensitive cmd which are ran only after checking few settings in your computer. That is the reason why it is not available for public to use.

I had a remote access session with Maseeullah and he quickly resolved the issue with a CMD command that reset some registry settings. Very grateful for his assistance and those of the other AVG technicians in this thread. However I wonder if the registry reset command could be made available for those that are hitting this issue (unfortunately I didn't make a note of it!)

> Ø  Open AVG -> Menu -> Settings -> Update -> update virus definitions AND update program definitions

Done - virus definitions updated to 171027-2, program definitions to 17.7.3032 (build 17.7.3660.241)

> Ø  Restart PC and check status of AVG components, if components are still not active click on “Fix” button in upper right side of AVG window

Restarted and Passive Mode is still enabled. Clicked on "Fix Now" and again it believes McAfee Anti-Virus is installed (same error as in first screenshot). I clicked on "Yes" to turn off Passive Mode, restarted the PC, but it had no effect - the PC restarted with Passive Mode disabled.

> Ø  If fix button is not available or does not work go again into settings of AVG and now choose Troubleshooting -> Passive mode -> and deactivate it (move the slider into green color)

You mean move it into the red color? It's already green as Passive Mode is enabled.

If I move the slider from green to red (to disable Passive Mode), AVG pops up a dialog saying I need to reboot (and at the same time, AVG moves the Passive Mode slider back to green - and I'm unable to click OK to save the settings). I reboot, and Passive Mode is still enabled. Basically, it's impossible to disable Passive Mode via Troubleshooting.

> Ø  Restart the PC and check the situation

None of the above has had any effect - AVG is still stuck in Passive Mode because it believes McAfee Anti Virus is installed.

Can you tell me what files (or registry entries?) AVG is checking which makes it falsely believe McAfee is installed?

Thanks for your help so far.
