I understand the inconvenience caused. There is no need to upgrade for this issue, it might be because of AVG update failed.
In this case, I request you to repair AVG Protection (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG) and reboot your computer once. After reboot, please check if your AVG Free antivirus program is working.

The AVG window displays a notice in red, stating You Are Not Protected. Next to the notice is a Fix Now Tab. This option does not appear to do anything! I am operating the Free AVG version, do I have to upgrade to continue with protection from AVG?
