There is no default email program associated

This looks like the Windows is requesting you to install an email client.
To confirm this, share the screenshot of the error message here.
You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

It appears that the issue is not related to AVG. We will need to locate the origin of the pop-up. 

We request you to download Process manger/Process Explorer tool from Microsoft or any of the legit websites. Once the tool is downloaded, please drag the '+' (appear on the screen) and place it on the pop-up. We will be able to find the origin and analyse it further.

I have been struggling to resolve this error message when windows 10 starts up.
"There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."
I've looked at all of the Microsoft support reset default apps.  But, typically, this message should only come up when you right click on a file to email it.  For me it is the first thing that happens when my computer logs in.  I shut down every startup program, except AVG and still get the message.  

Has anyone else encountered this and is there anything you can recommend for me to try?

This seems to be a genuine windows file. I request you to contact Microsoft or your computer manufacture and check if they can provide a solution for this error.

I installed Process Explorer.  When I startup my computer and sign in, the message pops up.  I drag the target icon over the window text and it showed it is related to:

Process is under wininit.exe\services.exe\svchost.exe

dllhost.exe - PID=13432 - Description = COM Surrogate - Microsoft Corporation
