This site cannot be reached

I'm running AVG Secure VPN Release 1.7.1 (266) on a MAC running MAC OS Catalina 10.15.2.  When I have AVG running, I'm not able to connect to any internet site.  I get the message 'This site cannot be reached.  Took too long to respond.  As soon as I turn AVG off, I can connect.  Any ideas what is happening?
