Thunderbird not responding

everytime i go into my thunderbird email acct since i have downloaded the avg internet security 2015 21 day trial…my thunderbird programs stops responding. If I wait long enough…like 3 minutes it will start responding again. But most of the time I have to shut it down and start it up and it gets a few emails, scans a few emails…then stops responding. if I try to compose and email when I first get into thunderbird when it is scanning emails…thunderbird stops responding…this never happened before I installed AVG. I have several more days before I have to pay for the avg program…if this can not be fixed…i will uninstall AVG and not opt to pay for a year.
Can you help me fix this problem ?
